Will generative artificial intelligence be the end of musical creation?
Streaming, which not long ago offered a legal solution to piracy, is now being inundated by a flood of sound “content” generated by AI-powered technologies — a very real threat to the independent music sector, which is already structurally challenged in its ability to generate digital revenue and thus to sustain itself.
By opening their servers to artificial content, streaming platforms are unfortunately devaluing the music created by artists — and with it, the very streaming model they helped to popularize. Even before the rise of generative AI, these platforms had already raised concerns about revenue dilution due to the daily upload of 150,000 new tracks!
In this context, we can only commend the transparency initiatives taken by Deezer, which disclosed that it now identifies over 20,000 new bot-generated audio files per day — twice the amount detected in January and accounting for 18% of new uploads on the platform. These numbers confirm the exponential growth of AI-generated content. Independent creators — artists, producers, and distributors — cannot accept unchecked technological disruption and are calling for the implementation of a plan to safeguard human musical creation.
In Europe, 80% of new music is produced each year by independents. While they embody musical diversity and artistic risk-taking in an already highly competitive environment, they are now being confronted with ruthless and unscrupulous competition from artificial content — created by models they have, ironically, helped train and improve without their consent, against their will, and without any financial compensation.
Independents are thus facing a double penalty, which is now weakening both their capacity and motivation to support the emergence of new artists. Yet the global music offering depends on the vitality of local creation: abandoning it means losing our value in the global market — our productive investment, our jobs, our cultural identity, our soft power.
Granted, ongoing efforts in Brussels aim to establish a framework allowing AI-based technologies to develop without undermining the principles of copyright and neighboring rights. However, the third version of the Code of Good Practices for Generative AI Providers has only betrayed the modest promises of the European AI Act and worsened the precarious situation of creators.
Upstream, the training of generative AI models must respect transparency and provide for fair remuneration of rights holders — either through the negotiation of individual licenses or collective rights management — provided those rights holders have not opted out.
Downstream, we call on platforms to take proactive measures to eliminate 100% AI-generated content that dilutes the value of music. The attractiveness of the streaming model itself is at stake, and the flood of « parasitic » content only erodes it further.
Through ongoing and newly launched initiatives, France must now make a firm and lasting commitment to preserving the regulatory framework it has patiently built in support of culture — to protect its artists, cultural diversity, cultural heritage, and the process of human creation.
As producers, we pledge to stand with artists and music fans to:
– Play an active role in defending European cultural sovereignty;
– Help improve algorithmic recommendations by providing certified metadata, within a model that includes all stakeholders;
– Safeguard the emergence of new genres and aesthetic diversity;
– Preserve the recorded heritage built over decades.
Let us unite — to sound the alarm on the dangers of AI and demand the implementation of a sector-wide safeguard plan.
